Boot-time scan settings

Manage these settings at: Menu ▸ Scan ▸ Scan for Viruses ▸ Boot-time scan ( ▸ Scan Settings )

Boot-time scan allows Avast to detect and remove hard to detect viruses before the operating system starts up.

It is not recommended to change default settings for boot-time scan. Instead you can Create a custom scan in the bottom right corner of the Scan screen.

Areas to scan

By default all harddisks are scanned. You can select additional Areas to scan.

Heuristics sensitivity - Heuristics analysis allows Avast to detect even unknown viruses and malware by analyzing code in the file. Adjust the sensitivity by clicking on the orange bars. You can turn it off completely by clicking the smallest bar. With higher sensitivity there is greater chance of a false positive detection.

Scan for potentially unwanted programs - PUPs are programs stealthily downloaded with other programs, and usually perform unwanted activity.

Unpack archive files - Avast scans inside archives such as .zip, .rar, and other compressed files.

When a threat is found...

You can choose actions to perform automatically during the scan.

  • Fix automatically - Run a sequence of actions (repair file; if not possible, then move to Virus Chest; if not possible, then delete)
  • Move to Chest - Send the threat to the Virus Chest where it cannot harm your system.
  • Repair - Remove only malicious code attached to an otherwise safe file; this is not possible for files which are entirely malware.
  • Ask - Avast asks what you want to do with each detected threat.
  • Delete - Permanently remove the file from your computer.
  • No action - No action is taken during the scan; the threat is listed in your scan results and you can decide what to do later.

Running a Boot-time scan

Go to Scan ▸ Scan for Viruses and select Boot-time scan from the drop-down menu.

Click Start to schedule the scan to run at the next system restart, before the operating system is active.
